The Indiana County American Cancer Society will be sponsoring a major fund-raising drive next week.

The Indiana Giant Eagle will be participating in the 12th annual Grocers Fight Cancer event, starting Oct. 18 and running to Oct. 22. The project in Indiana became the top grossing Grocers Fight Cancer operation in Pennsylvania when, two years ago, the goal of $20,000 was met.

This year's goal is $30,000, a target that Ed Sweeney of ACS is more than confident they can meet this year.

"Literally, hundreds will be helping us [this year]" from the IUP campus, Sweeney said. "IUP students have been volunteering to help make this event a success."

Students from various Greek organizations, the Student Dietetics Association, the IUP Drill Team and Circle K will all be contributing to the fund-raising event this year.

Students from the various organizations will be selling raffle tickets leading up to Oct. 22. Tickets can also be purchased from Giant Eagle.

"Fifty percent of the success comes from the IUP community," Sweeney said.

Starting Oct. 18, a percentage of all the profits from each business day at the Indiana Giant Eagle will go to the Indiana ACS. On Oct. 22, a car-smashing event will be open to the public. Anyone can take a swing at the vehicle, which is donated yearly, for $1.

Winners of the raffle tickets will be announced, blood pressure checks will be available and free healthy food samples and literature will be available Oct. 22 from the Student Dietetics Association.

Throughout the week, a food wagon will be available at Giant Eagle. The proceeds from the food, raffle tickets and the car-smashing event will all go towards helping the ACS reach its goal this year.

Goals for next year could be as high as $50,000, although the amount is not yet set. Hopes are high for this year though, thanks to the volunteer efforts of IUP students and the community, said Sweeney.

Students are welcome to volunteer their time at the ACS in Indiana. Students can contact the ACS at 1-888-227-5445, and explain that they want to offer volunteer services.
